Meteorological Services Department Joins National Clean-Up Campaign

Harare, May 2, 2025. The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) today joined the rest of the nation in commemorating the monthly National Clean-Up Campaign, a bold initiative declared by His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, aimed at fostering a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Zimbabwe.
MSD staff today put on their gloves, grabbed their brooms, and actively participated in cleaning up their surroundings. In Harare, the MSD team was seen sprucing up the areas around their premises in Belvedere, clearing litter, trimming overgrown grass and ensuring proper waste disposal.

Speaking during the clean-up, MSD emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship, particularly for a department so closely tied to natural systems. “As custodians of climate and weather information, we understand firsthand how environmental degradation can impact weather patterns and climate resilience. Participating in this campaign is not just a civic duty, it is aligned with our mission,”
The department also took the opportunity to educate the public on the connection between climate change and waste management. They highlighted how improper waste disposal, particularly of plastics, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and urban flooding, which complicates meteorological forecasting and disaster preparedness.
“We encourage all Zimbabweans to take these clean-up campaigns seriously. It’s not just about picking up litter it’s about adopting a sustainable mindset, preserving our ecosystems, and ensuring a livable environment for future generations,” said one enthusiastic meteorologist, at MSD HQ.

The Clean-Up Campaign, instituted in 2018, occurs on the first Friday of every month and is anchored in the President’s vision of a middle-income, environmentally-conscious economy by 2030. Over the years, it has gained traction across government departments, private entities, and communities at large.
By participating in this initiative, the Meteorological Services Department reaffirms its commitment not only to accurate and timely weather forecasting but also to national development goals and environmental sustainability.
