Meteorological Services Department Continues to Strengthens Aviation Weather Capability

Meteorological Services Department (MSD) of Zimbabwe today marked a significant milestone in the modernization of the country's aviation meteorological infrastructure following the reception of state-of-the-art Automatic Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) repairs and equipments destined for deployment at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and Vic Falls International Airport.
The advanced systems, which will be installed in the coming weeks, represent a strategic investment in Zimbabwe's aviation weather capability, reinforcing the country's commitment to delivering accurate, reliable and real-time meteorological observations that underpin safe, efficient and resilient air transport operations.

As air traffic continues to grow and weather-related operational risks become increasingly complex, the need for precise atmospheric observations has never been greater. These repairs are purpose-built for airport environments, providing continuous, high-precision measurements of critical weather parameters that support aircraft take-off and landing, air traffic management, flight planning and airport ground operations.
Manufactured by Vaisala a global leader in measurement instruments and intelligence for climate action, the sophisticated systems transform highly accurate atmospheric observations into trusted operational intelligence. Across the global aviation industry, Vaisala's technologies enable airports and meteorological authorities to make informed, evidence-based decisions, even in the most demanding weather conditions.
Accurate weather information remains central to every stage of aviation operations. Reliable observations enhance situational awareness for pilots, air traffic controllers and airport operators, strengthening operational efficiency while reducing weather-related disruptions and supporting the highest standards of aviation safety.
The deployment of these repairs and new equipments at Zimbabwe's two strategic international gateways will substantially enhance the country's aeronautical meteorological observation network, improve the quality and continuity of weather data, and support compliance with international aviation meteorological standards.
The milestone reflects the Meteorological Services Department's unwavering commitment to technological innovation and service excellence, in line with its mission “to provide customer and stakeholder-driven quality seismological, weather and climate services for socio-economic development and its vision of becoming a world-class provider of meteorological, climatological and seismological products and services.
The modernization of aviation weather infrastructure at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and Victoria Falls International Airport further positions Zimbabwe to strengthen aviation safety, operational resilience and national connectivity. It also demonstrates the Department's continued investment in cutting-edge observation technologies that provide trusted meteorological intelligence in support of economic growth, sustainable development and a safer aviation sector
