The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) recently celebrated World Meteorological Day 2023, showcasing the department's vital work through a variety of engaging activities such as plays, music, drama, poetry, exhibitions, and outreach programs. The theme for this year, "At The Frontline of Climate Action," underscored the importance of strengthening Early Warning Systems to combat the increasing frequency of weather and climate extremes. The event provided a platform for MSD to highlight its ongoing efforts and achievements in meteorology, inviting the public to learn more about the essential role of meteorological services in climate resilience.

Reflecting on the theme of the previous year's World Meteorological Day, "The Future of Weather, Climate, and Water across Generations," MSD had set up a museum exhibition that showcased the evolution of meteorological equipment and technological advancements in meteorological infrastructure. This exhibition highlighted significant investments by the Government of Zimbabwe over the past year, including the procurement of five Doppler weather radars covering the entire country. In partnership with various stakeholders, the government also acquired over 100 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) to modernize and expand the meteorological network, ensuring comprehensive data coverage, particularly in areas with sparse meteorological data. These initiatives are part of Zimbabwe's commitment to the "Early Warnings for All" initiative, aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness and protecting lives through advanced meteorological innovations.
